Sutton in Ashfield - Jct Mansfield Road & Downing Street

This freestanding memorial, which was previously in the grounds of St Michael and All Angels, Sutton in Ashfield, was restored and relocated at the junction of Mansfield Road and Downing Street in 2009. It was rededicated on 25 October 2009. A time capsule was placed in the enclave containing the names and photographs of those commemorated on the memorial together with a DVD showing the redevelopment of the memorial/site. The memorial was originally unveiled and dedicated in 1921 and a lengthy report of the ceremony was published in the Mansfield Reporter on 26 August 1921: ‘Sutton’s War Memorial. Unveiled by Lieut-Colonel AB Smith. An Impressive Ceremony. A handsome octagonal folliated cross erected in front of the church of St Michael’s and All Angels and facing the main roadway, as a memorial to the 227 men from the parish who fell in the war. … The inscription is ‘To the Glory of God and in memory of the men of this parish who gave their lives in the Great War, 1914-919.’' The names of those commemorated on the memorial were read out during the ceremony by the Bishop of Southwell and the newspaper report included a list of the names.
