Arthur was born in 1898 at Sutton-in-Ashfield and was the son of the late John a factory frame work knitter and Ann Woolley née Martin and the brother of Albert William, Beatrice Kate, Hilda Annie, Sarah Eleanor, Samuel Frederick and Elizabeth Margery Woolley.
His father John was born in Sutton in Ashfield in 1860, he died in 1911 at Sutton in Ashfield, he was 51 yrs old, his mother Ann Martin was born in 1863 at Nottingham, they were married on 15th May 1890 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham Registration district,
In 1911 they lived at 34 Carpet Lane Sutton in Ashfield Ann Woolley 47 yrs is a widow she is living with her children, Albert William 16 yrs a bookkeeper in a hosiery factory, Beatrice Kate 14 yrs an embriodary frame worker. Arthur Edward 13 yrs a milk seller, Hilda Annie 11 yrs a scholar.Sarah Eleanor 9 yrs, Samuel Frederick 5 yrs and Elizabeth Margaret 2 yrs of age.
Arthur enlisted at Derby and served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derbys ) Regiment. He had been reported ‘missing’ and was officially listed ‘as killed in action’ on Saturday 5th October 1918, aged 20 years, and he is buried in the Beaurevoir British Cemetery, Aisne, France. grave reference D 2

MISSING - PRIVATE AE WOOLLEY (SUTTON)
The relatives of Private AE Woolley 268952, A Company, 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters of 14 Alfred Street, Sutton will be pleased to receive any news concerning this missing soldier. The battalion made an attack near Fontain on October 5th 1918, since which date Private Woolley is officially reported as missing.
Arthur Woolley’s name is also remembered on the St Michael and All Angels War Memorial, Sutton-in-Ashfield.
He was awarded the British War and Victory Medals.
