William Norwood was born in 1894 at Sutton in Ashfield, he was the son of George and Hannah Norwood and the brother of Luke Sills (died of wounds 11/4/1921), Lily, James, Leah May, Eliza and Henry Norwood. of 57 Mason Street Sutton in Ashfield
His father George was born in 1861 at Carnfield, Derbyshire, he died in 1914 at Mansfield he was 53 yrs old, his mother Hannah Sills was born in 1861 at Sutton in Ashfield, they were married in 1881 at Suton in Ashfield They had fourteen children and William was one of nine to survive infancy. His siblings were Lily, James, Leah May, Luke (died 11th April 1921 ) Eliza, Henry, John and Ernest Norwood.
In 1911 they lived at 21 Stonyford Road, Sutton in Ashfield, Lane and George 50 yrs a colliery winding engineer, he is living with his wife Hannah 52 yrs a housewife and their children, Luke 22 yrs a corporal in a coal mine, Lily 22 yrs a hosiery hand, James 20 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Leah May 18 yrs assisting in house duties, William 17 yrs a colliery banksman, Eliza 14 yrs a hosiery hand and Henry 12 yrs of age.
Private William Norwood enlisted at Mansfield he initially served with the service number 32939 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) he latertransferred to the 2nd battalion Highland Light Infantry, he was killed inaction on 6th July 1917 and is buried atWoburnAbbey Cemetery, France.
his brother Luke Sills Norwood served with the 258th Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers, he died on 11th April 1921 of a carcinoma of the duodenum and is buired at Sutton in Ashfield Cemetery.
