Henry Farrands was born on 8th February 1893 he was baptised on 12th June 1893 at St Marys Church, Sutton in Ashfield, he was the son of Edward a frame work knitter and Mary Ellen Farrands, née Handley of Outram Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield.
His father Edward was born in 1863 at Sutton in Ashfield, his mother Mary Ann Handley was born in 1865 at Sutton in Ashfield, they were married in 1884 at Mansfield, they had 9 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. a further son John William born 1900.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 36 Outram Street, Sutton in Ashfield, Edward 47 yrs is a frame work knitter he is living with his wife Mary Ellen 45 yrs and their children, Frank25 yrs a coal miner banksman, Henry 18 yrs a coal miner Mary 14 rs a hosiery winder, Hilda Annie 12 yrs a scholar and John William 10 yrs a scholar.
Private Henry Farrands enlisted at Sutton-in-Ashfield 12th July 1915 he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, and went to France 24th September 1915. He was wounded 5th April 1917 and was sent to Brynkinalt Hospital, Wales. He returned to France in July 1917 and was killed 26th September 1917.
