Family history

Samuel Hodgkinson was born in 1890 at Mansfield he was the son of Joseph Frederick a coal miner hewer and Hannah Hodgkinson née Shaw and the brother of Joseph Frederick, Bertha, Jane, Clara and Arthur Hodgkinson.

His father Joseph Frederick was born in 1859 at Newborough, Staffordshire, his mother Hannah Shaw was born in 1861 at Calow, Derbyshire, they were married on 13th January 179 at Wombwell Yorkshire they wnt on to have 13 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 6 North Street South Normanton Derbyshire. Joseph Frederick 52 yrs is a caol miner hewer, he is living with his wife Hannah 50 yrs and their children, Joseph Frederick 24 yrs a coal miner hewer, Henretta 18 yrs no occupation listed, Samuel 20 yrs single a coal miner hewer, Bertha 10 yrs Jane 9 years of age.

He was the husband of Eleanor (née Cresswell) Hodgkinson (born 21st May 1892 ) and the father of Eleanor born 1912- died 1913, Joseph Frederick born 24th June 1914 and Miriam Hodgkinson born 13th April 1916, they lived at 71 Portland Road, Shirebrook.

Commencing 25th June 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 9 shillings and 2 pence a week for her children.

Eleanor married Harry Morley at Mansfield in 1917 and they lived at 25 Hope Street Mansfield Woodhouse Nottinghamshire.

Military history

Lance Corporal Samuel Hodgkinson, initially served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment at Gallipoli, he was serving with 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, when he died of wounds at No. 1 General Hospital on 16th December 1916. He is buried in Etretat Churchyard.
