Family history

William Henry Spencer was born in 1888 at Belper he was the son of William a joiner and Mary Spencer née Flinders, of 60 Nottingham Road, Belper.

His father William was born in 1867 at Belper, his mother Mary Flinders was born in 1868 also at Belper, they were married on 31st October 1888 at St Peters Church, Belper, they went on to have 4 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 60 Nottingham Road, Belper William 44 yrs is a joiner, he is living with his wife Mary 43 yrs and their children, William 22 yrs a railway labourer, Louisa 18 yrs a cotton mill packer and Leonard 17 yrs a pit banksman.

William Henry married Edith Harris (born 12th December 1889 ) on 2nd August 1909 at North Wingfield, Derbyshire, they lived at 23 Dalestorth Street, Sutton in Ashfield, they had 2 children, Ederick Stephen born 22nd February 1911 and Ralph born 11th November 1912.

In 1911 they lived at 23 Dalesforth Street Sutton in Ashfield. William 23 yrs a hosiery manufacturer he is living with his wife Edith 23 yrs and their son Edrick Stephen 1 month old.

His widow was awarded a pension of 29 shilligs and 6 pence which commenced on 28th April 1919

Edith married William Mellors in 1920.

Military history

Private William Henry Spencer enlisted at Mansfield, in February 1916. he initially served with the service number 77533 with the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derbys) Regiment.

He was killed in action near Villers-Outreaux on 9th October 1918
