Family History

Alfred Radford was born in Skegby, he was baptised on 22nd November 1891 at Skegby he was the son of the late William Webster Radford, a coal miner shunter and Ann Radford née Weedup of Skegby. His father William Webster Radford was born in 1852 in Staffordshire, he was died on 12th July 1899 after being accidentally injured whilst down the pit on 11th July 1899, he was 58 yrs of age, his mother Ann Weedup was born in 1857 at Sutton in Ashfield, they were married on 12th October 1875 at St Marys church, Sutton in Ashfield, they went on to have 6 children. In the 1911 census the family are Leyton Ave, Skegby, Ann is 54 yrs a widow, she is living with her married son Andrew 23 yrs a coal miner hewer and her daughter Mary 23 yrs. In the same 1911 census we find Alfred has left the family home he is a lodger 19 yrs a coal miner loader, he is living at at 37 Mansfield Road, Sutton in Ashfield, he is boarding with Lydia Chappell 53 yrs a widowed dressmaker. Alfred married Ellen Fryer (born 8th September 1885 at Unstone, Derbyshire) they were married in 1913 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they lived at 8 Mansfield Road, Sutton in Ashfield, they had a son Graham Radford born 12th November 1914. Commencing 3rd June 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military History

Lance Corporal Alfred Radford enlisted an d served with the 20th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he landed in France on 10th August 1915, e died of wounds on 24th November 1917, he is buried at Bucquoy Road, Cemetery, France.
