George William Marriott

George was the eldest son of Thomas Marriott and Charlotte Marriott (nee Bennett). Thomas was born in Old Radford, Nottingham, probably in 1870, and Charlotte was born in 1871 in Norwell Woodhouse; they were probably married in 1889 (A/M/J Southwell). Thomas and Charlotte had been married for 22 years at the time of the 1911 Census and had had nine children who were all still living: Harriett Gertrude (b. Cromwell), George William (b. Cromwell), Edith M. (b. Carlton on Trent), Lilian (b. 1899, Stathern Leicestershire), Albert Edward O (b. 1902 Leicester), Thomas (b. 1905, Old Basford), Arthur (b. Old Basford), Elsie (b. 1907 Old Basford) and Ivy May (b. 1909 Old Basford). In 1891 Thomas (21) was an agricultural horseman, living in Cromwell with his wife Charlotte (20) and son George W. (3 months). George was their second child, their first child being a daughter, Harriett, who may have been born on 2 February 1889; she has not yet been traced on the 1891 Census. By 1901 Thomas was working as a railway signalman and he and Charlotte were living at Stathern with their four children Harriett (12), George (10), Edith (7) and Lilian (1). By 1911 Thomas (41), who was now a signal manager, and Charlotte (40) were living at 584 Vernon Road, Basford, Nottingham. They now had nine children, all of whom were at home on the night of the census: Harriett (22), George (20) a trimmer-hosiery, Edith (17) an upholsterer, Lilian (11), Albert (8), Thomas (6), Arthur (4), Elsie (3) and Ivy May (1). Also in the household was Thomas and Charlotte's granddaughter, Doris Marriott (b. 1910 A/M/J Nottingham). George enlisted in the RAMC (Territorial Force) on 6 October 1913 when he was 22 years 10 months old. He was discharged from the army 'being medically unfit for further military service' on 12 November 1914 having served for 1 year 37 days; he was recorded as having been on Home Service from 5 August 1914-12 November 1914. George had nominated his father as his next of kin when he attested in 1913; Thomas Marriott's address was given as 143 Bulwell Lane, Old Basford. George William Marriott married his wife Alice Sophia Perkins (born 20th December 1892) in 1915 at Nottingham, they lived at 6 Northcote Street, Bulwell they went on to have a daughter Edith Cavell born 26th March 1916 . Following his death his widow Alice Sophia was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week which commenced on 14th April 191919.
