Nottingham (Old Basford) - St Aiden's Church

St Aiden's Church, 47 Arnold Road, Old Basford, Nottingham NG6 0DN. Nottinghamshire Archives has a Parochial Church Council minute book (1905-1923) which records the discussions relating to the War Memorial Fund and the choice of War Memorial (Nottinghamshire Archives, ref PR19,226). Initial discussions in 1918 with other churches and organisations for a 'public memorial' appear to have lapsed and in 1921 it was recommended that the memorial in the church take the form of a font cover. However, the extant memorials are a pulpit and Book of Remembrance in a wooden case. The hexagonal shaped oak pulpit has the following verse carved around the base of the pulpit above the stem, 'To the glory of God and in grateful memory of the men of this parish who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-18, we died that England might live, do thou live that England may not die'. (The stem of the pulpit was removed in 1966 and the inscription is now at floor level.) The pulpit was dedicated on 22nd November 1923. A Book of Remembrance contained in a glass top oak case gives the names of the fallen from the parish. There is an article about the dedication of the Book of Remembrance in the Southwell Diocesan Magazine Vol 3 (NS) April 1930, No 4 (p65): 'Subscribed for by all sections of the community in the parish, a parchment Book of Remembrance of those who fell in the war, together with an oak stand, were dedicated by the Vicar [Rev. GH Vine] at a service in St Aidan’s. The stand is artistically designed and the Book of Remembrance has the names of the 130 fallen inscribed on its pages. It closes with the words: “We died that England might live. Do thou live that England may not die.”'
