James Hawkridge was the son of John George Hawkridge and Louisa Badder who married at Nottingham in 1889. Their eight children were: James (b.1889), Lily (b.1891), John George (b.1895), Arthur Edward (b.1896), Emma (b.1899), William (b.1901), Edgar (b.1904) and Walter (b.1906). The family lived at: 4 Chard Terrace, Basford [C.1891]; 6 Burgass Street, Carrington, Nottingham [C.1901]; 11 Brougham Place, Holland Street, Hyson Green [C.1911]. John George Hawkridge, who was a lace machine fitter, died at Nottingham, aged 53, in 1922. His widow, Louisa, died at Nottingham, aged 76, in 1946. In 1914 James Hawkridge married May Farnsworth at Nottingham. They had one child: James (b.1915). His widow lived at 12 Wilford Terrace, Bridlington Street, Hyson Green [CWGC]. May Hawkridge married William Henshaw at Nottingham in 1919. May Henshaw was living at 38 Penrith Crescent, Aspley, Nottingham when she died, aged 76, in February 1970.
Private James Hawkridge, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 11th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he died of wounds on 12th November 1918. He is buried in Cremona Town Cemetery, Italy.
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 18th November 1918 :- “HAWKRIDGE. – Pte. James Hawkridge, the dearly loved husband of May Hawkridge, died of wounds in Italy, November 12th, after four years service, aged 29. God called him in the pride of his manhood days, none knew him but to love him and speak his name with praise. – From his heart-broken wife and children, mother, father, sisters, brothers, Arthur in France.” In memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 13th November 1919 :- “HAWKRIDGE. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. James Hawkridge, died of wounds received in Italy November 12th, 1918. His painful sufferings now are ended, his wounded body is at rest, his soul from every ill descended, reposing on his Saviour's breast. – From his devoted wife and dear little children.” Above obituary and in memoriam are courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918.
