Family History

Herbert Sheppard was born in 1892 at Upton he was the son of William James a council roadman and Elizabeth Sheppard née Rockley of Upton village. William James was born in 1860 at Upton, Elizabeth Rockley was born in 1865 at Southwell, they were married in 1865 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district, they went on to have 10 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at Upton, William James 51yrs is a council roadman, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 46 yrs and 6 of their children, Herbert in not at the home address when the 1911 census was taken.

Military History

Private Herbert Sheppard enlisted on 25th August 1914 at Mansfield, giving his age as 22 yrs and 1 month. Posted to the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he landed in France on 17th December 1914. He was killed in action, 12th March 1915 during the counter attack by the Germans at Neuve Chapelle, France. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France. Panel 26 and 27.
