Family History

George Cropper was born in 1886 at Upton, he was the son of the late Joseph Cropper a corn miller and Emma Cropper née Quninton of The windmill, Upton and the brother of Edward, Frederick and Leonard Cropper. Joseph was born in 1847 at North Clifton, Lincolnshire, he died in 1902 aged 55 yrs. Emma Quniton was born in 1857 at Mansfield they were married in 1876 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district hey went 0n to have 12 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at Upton Windmill Southwell Nottinghamshire Emma 54 yrs is a widow and cottager, she is living with 4 of her sons, George 26 yrs a farm labourer, Edward 26 yrs a miller, baker Frederick 21 yrs a nursery labourer and Leonard 19 yrs a farm labourer.

Military History

Private George Cropper attested on 11th December 1915 at Southwell, giving his age as 31 yrs and 2 months he was a nurseryman labourer, he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised for war on 3rd May 1916 he was posted with service number 45435 to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He embarked from Folkstone on 14th October 1916 disembarking on same day at Boulogne and arrived at Etaples Depot on 29th November 1916 and was transferred to the 13th battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. He joined his unit in the field on 2nd June 1916 and was killed in action on 8th March 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France
