Family History

Clement Hinton Langsdale was born in 1889 in Leek Staffordshire and was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Langsdale born 1870 in Notts. His mother married Edgar Pownall in 1894 in Notts and so Clement became known as Clement Pownall He was the step brother to Eva, Edward, Emily, Jack and Eric Pownall. In 1911 they lived on Inkley Row Gunthorpe .

Military History

Private Clement Pownall, enlisted in Nottingham on 6th August 1914, for 6 yrs service in the special reserve. He was 25 yrs and 187 days old, his occupation was a marine stores dealer. his religion was Church of England. He served with 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action on 12th March 1915. Reportedly the first man to volunteer from Gunthorpe, he landed in France on 27th December 1914. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
