Ernest Markwell was born in 1894 at Newark and was the son of William a boiler plate maker and Mary Elizabeth Markwell née Dickinson of 24 Albion Street, Newark. His father William was born in 1864 at Deptford, Kent, his mother Mary Elizabeth Dickinson was born in 1865 at Grantham they were married in 1888 at Sheffield and went on to have 7 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Newark were, Fred b1891, Ernest b1894 and William b1899. In the 1911 census the family are living at 24 Albion Street, Newark and are shown as, William 47 yrs a boiler plate maker, he is living with his wife Mary Elizabeth 46 yrs and their children, Fred 20 yrs an iron turners apprentice, Ernest 16 yrs an iron turners apprentice and William 12 yrs a scholar.
Lance Corporal Ernest Markwell attested on 11th Mark 1912 at Newark for service with the territorial army for 4 years, giving his age as 17 yrs and 8 months, his address was 24 Albion Street, Newark, he was an engineers turner by trade and his next of kin was his father William of the same address . He was posted to the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters. At the outbreak of war he was embodied into the Army and on 26th September 1914 he was promoted to Lance Corporal. On 25th February 1915 he embarked from Southampton and landed in France the following day. He was serving with 'B' Company 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters when he was killed in action on 30th April 1915. He is buried in Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, Heuvelland, Belgium.
Article published in the Newark Herald on 8th May 1915 :- Second son of Mr & Mrs William Markwell of Newark. Educated at Christ Church Day & Sunday Schools before becoming an apprentice at Messrs. Wakes & Lamb as a turner. Also joined the 8th Sherwood Foresters and was with them on camp at the outbreak of war. A footballer with Farndon and Beacon Hill, also a cricketer in the summer. Would have been 21 in June. Shot through the head while on sentry duty. His brother is also in the 8th Sherwood Foresters. Colour Sgt. F. Markwell is acting quartermaster, now at Luton.
