Family History

Wilfrid Ratcliffe Knight was born on 10th April 1897 at Gunthorpe, he was baptised on 21st August 1898 at St Thomas Church Radcliffe, Lancaster and was the son of Martin an invoice clerk and Jane Knight née Ratcliffe an elementary school teacher of School House, Gunthorpe, Nottingham. His father Martin was born in 1870 at Lowdham and his mother Jane Ratcliffe was born in 1866 at Manchester, they were married on 10th August 1894 at St Catherine Church, Barton upon Irewell, Lancaster. They went on to have 4 children, sadly one died in Infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Hubert Joseph Martin b1896, Wilfrid Ratcliffe b1897 and Elsie Mary b1908 all were born in Lowdham. In the 1911 census the family are living at School House, Gunthorpe and are shown as Martin 41 yrs an invoice clerk he is living with his wife Jane 45 yrs and their children Hubert J. M 15 yrs a junior clerk, Wilfrid R 13 yrs a scholar and Elsie Mary 3 yrs of age. His probate was proven with will on 28th December 1917 at Nottingham and shows him as Wilfrid Ratcliffe Knight of Gunthorpe, Nottinghamshire Lance Corporal H.M.Army died 27th June 1917 in France, his effects of £131 5 shillings and 9 pence were left to Jane Knight wife of Martin Knight

Military History

Lance Corporal Wilfrid Ratcliffe Knight served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 27th June 1917 and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 15. Row D. Grave 20.
