William Henry Barratt was born in 1888 at Bingham, he was the son of John Wilson Barratt a farm labourer and his first wife Emma Barratt née Daft of Morrises Row, Chapel Lane, Bingham. His father was born in 1863 at Hailsham, his mother Emma Daft was born in 1866 at Sutton, she died on 23rd December 1892 at Bingham, aged 26 yrs, they went on to have 3 children, William Henry born 1888, Samuel born 1889 and Walter born 1891. His father re married Emma Parnham born 1859 at Bottesford, they were married on 21st October 1893 at St Marys Church, Bingham, they had a further 3 children, John Leonard b1895, Elizabeth born 1900 and Ethel born 1901. In the 1911 census the family are living at Morrises Row, Chapel Lane, Bingham, John 48 yrs of age a farm labourer is living with his second wife Emma 52 yrs and his six children, including William Henry 28 yrs a painter and paper hanger.
Sergeant William Henry Barratt enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bingham he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action, 3rd September 1916, in the attack on the German positions north-west of Thiepval, France, during the Battle of the Somme,.he is buried at Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont Hammell, France.
