David Baldry

David was the son of David Baldry and his wife Louisa (nee Priest). His father was born in Rendham, Suffolk, on 16 September 1868, the son of James and Mary Baldry. His mother was born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, on 7 July 1871, the daughter of Josiah and Louisa Priest. (Dates of birth as 1939 England & Wales Register.) At the time of the 1881 Census David and Louisa were living with their families at Babbington Cottages, Basford, and 81 Duchess Street, Bulwell, respectively. David and Louisa were married in 1891 (J/F/M Nottingham) and had eight children, only six surviving childhood. Six children were named on the census of 1901 and 1911: David b. 1891 (A/M/J Basford), Mabel b. 1893 (O/N/D Basford), Frederick b. 30 October 1895, James b. 1902 (O/N/D Basford), Isaac b. 1907 (J/A/S Nottingham) and Louisa b. 3 February 1910 (J/F/M Nottingham). All the children were born in Bulwell, Nottingham. In 1901 David (32) a coal miner hewer, and Louisa (29) were living at 3 Hoeward Terrace, Bulwell, with their three children, David (9), Mabel (7) and Frederick (5). By 1911 David (42) and Louisa (40) were living at 9 Downing Street, Bulwell, with their six surviving children; David (9) coal miner hewer, Mabel (17) curtain mender, Fred (15) a miner, James (8), Isaac (3) and Louisa (1). Also in the household was a boarder, Alice Allen (18), a lace dresser. David (jnr) married Lily Green later the same year (1911, J/A/S Nottingham); no record has been found of any children of the marriage. David's parents were living at 19 Leonard Street, Bulwell, by 1915 and were still at the same address in 1939 at the time of the England & Wales Register. His father was described as a retired coal miner hewer. David Baldry died in 1944 (Jun Nottingham) and Louisa Baldry died aged 89 in March 1961 (Mar Nottingham). Of David's siblings: Mabel probably married Charles Eason in 1913 (J/A/S Nottingham). She may have later lived in Yorkshire East Riding and died aged 66 in 1959 (Dec Wortley East Riding). Frederick attested on 6 June 1915 in Nottingham aged 19 years and 9 months; he was living with his parents at 19 Leonard Street, Bagnall, Nottingham. He served in the Royal Field Artillery (9941 Gunner) and was in France from 20 November 1915 to 28 December the same year. He then had periods of home service and two more periods on the Western Front from 8 March 1916 to 4 April 1918 and again from 4 August 1918 to 22 December 1918. He was discharged from the army on 20 January 1919, partially disabled as a result of bronchitis 'due to gassing'. He married Ada Merrin (b. 14 May 1896) in 1919 (A/M/J Nottingham) and in 1939 they were living at 15 Leonard Street, Bulwell; Frederick was still working as a coal miner hewer. Frederick died on 19 March 1980. James probably married Mary A Baldry (sic) in 1925 (O/N/D Nottingham). Isaac has not yet been identified after 1911. Louisa married Samuel Hufton (b. 9 July 1907) in 1933 (A/M/J Nottingham); Samuel's father also served in the war. In 1939 they were living at 203 Amebury Circus, Nottingham; Samuel was a tobacco worker in the dispatch department. Louisa died aged 74 in 1985 (Jan Nottingham).
