Son of Charles Afford & Elizabeth (Lizzie) Mellors, who married in Nottingham in 1890. They had eight children, five of whom were alive in the 1911 census. They were Albert, born in 1893, Charles, born in 1896, Douglas, born in 1897, Elsie May, born in 1904 and Ada, born in 1911. They lived at 4 Dovedale Terrace, Hyson Green before moving to 2 Enfield Road, New Basford and finally 8 Nuthall Road, Bobbersmill, Nottingham. Edward Afford worked a a shoeing blacksmith. He died in Nottingham in 1935, but Elizabeth survived him until 1956.
Afford volunteered for service in Nottingham and following training he was drafted to France. His battalion was heavily involved in the fighting in the Hooge and Zouave Wood area in the Ypres Salient on 1-5/06/1915. He was seriously wounded and sent down the line to hospital in Boulogne, where he died of his wounds on 14/06/1916. He was buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
Death notice published 17th June 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “AFFORD. – Died of wounds, June 14th, Private Albert Afford, 1st Lincolns, 8, Nuttal-road. He died a noble death, and was loved by all.” In memoriam published 14th June 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “AFFORD. – In loving memory of Private Albert Afford, died of wounds June 14th, 1915. Loved too well to be forgotten. – Mother, father, and sisters, and brothers in Salonika.” In memoriam published 14th June 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “AFFORD. – In loving memory of Private Albert Afford, died of wounds June 14th 1915. Fondly remembered. – Father, mother, sisters, brothers Douglas (in France), Charlie (Salonika). In memoriam published 27th September 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “AFFORD. – In loving memory of Corpl. Shoeing-smith Charles Afford, 1/1st South Notts. Hussars, killed in action Sept. 27th, 1918, in Palestine; also brother Albert Afford, died of wounds June 14th, 1915. Too dearly loved to be forgotten.
