Family History

John was born in 1883 at Arnold, he was the son of the late Henry a frame work knitter and Alice Gretton née Dove of Furlong Street, Arnold, Nottingham. His father Henry was born in 1853 at Arnold, he died in 1910 aged 58 yrs, his mother Alice Dove was born in 1852 also at Arnold, they were married in 1870 at Nottingham, they had a daughters Alice b1876 Sarah b1880, and a son John Henry b1883 all were born in Arnold. In the 1911 Census the family is living at Furlong Street, however his father has died and he was out visiting on the night of the census.( He was at 3 Kendal St,Nottingham and is a visitor there visiting the only other person at the address a Miss Lily Johnson ) He is shown as single and a grocer shop assistant working for the Mansfield Co Operative Society . John Henry married his wife Ada Hardwick in 1915 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 23 Burford Street, Arnold. His widow Ada was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 1st April 1918.

Military History

Private John Henry Gretton enlisted in Arnold in 1916 into the 16th (Chatsworth Rifles) Battalion The Sherwood Foresters which had been formed on the 16th April 1915. The battalion arrived in France and Flanders on the 6th March 1916. It was in November 1916, that his battalion moved into the Ypres Salient, and by July, 1917, they had seen much fighting and lost many comrades. The battalion moved into the Brandhoek Hill Top Sector on the 28th July 1917, and during action in this area he was killed in action on 31st July 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial, Ypres, Belgium
