James Woodward was baptised on 13th July 1887 at St John’s church, Bulwell he was the son of George a brick layer and Mary Ann Woodward née Taylor of 73 Latham Street, Bulwell. His father George was born in 1848 at Bulwell, his mother Mary Ann Taylor was born in 1848 at Henley in Arden, they were married on 8th November 1869 at St John’s Church, Bulwel, they had 14 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at 73 Latham Street, Bulwell, George 63 yrs is a bricklayer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 63 yrs and their children James 24 yrs a coal miner, Nellie 19 yrs a lace finisher and Alice 16 yrs a lace finisher. James married Lilly Pavier (born 28th February 1892) on 13th March 1911 at St John’s church Bulwell, they lived on Hazel Grove, Hazel Street, Bulwell. They had 2 children, Owen born 5th March 1913 and Lilian born 6th October 1914. His widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week. She remarried on 2nd August 1918 to William Carter a corporal in the Machine Gun Corps.
Private James Woodward enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bulwell, he served with the 7th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 23rd April 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
