Family History

George Woodward was born in 1888 at Bulwell, he was the son of William a traction engine driver and Elizabeth Woodward née Holmes of 9 Hart Street, Bulwell. His father William was born in 1864 at Bulwell, his mother Elizabeth Holmes was born in 1866 at Basford, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 6 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 9 Hart Street, Bulwell, William 47 yrs is a traction engine driver, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 45 yrs and their children George 22 yrs a wagon works labourer, Arthur 20 yrs a coal miner rope mender, Hilda 10 yrs a scholar, Elsie 8 yrs and William 3 yrs of age. George married Ellen Staniforth ( born 9th January 1894) in 1912 at Nottingham, they lived at 43 Oxford Street, Bulwell. Commencing 4th February 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 17 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private George Woodward enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Buwlell, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 14th July 1917 and is buried at Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux-En-Gohelle, France. Plot 9. Row C. Grave 46.
