William was born in 1885 in Basford and was the son of Joseph a driller and Sarah Winfield née Dakin of 1 Kirkwhite Ave, Long Eaton, Derbyshire. His father Joseph was born in 1859 in Castle Donnington, his mother Sarah Dakin was born in 1861 also in Castle Donnington, they were married in 1878, their marriage was recorded in the Derby Registration District, they went on to have 11 children : Henry b1881 Castle Donnington, Ernest b1884 Castle Donnington, William b1885 Basford, Fred b1887 Basford, Albert b1889 Bulwell, Arthur b1893 Bulwell, Horace b1895 Bulwell, Gilbert b1899 Bulwell and Eva b1903 Long Eaton. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Kirkwhite Ave, Long Eaton, Derbyshire.
Lance Corporal William Winfield enlisted in Nottingham, he initially served with service number 30506 in the Norfolk Regiment later transferring to the 2nd battalion Royal Fusiliers. He died of wounds on 5th September 1918 and is buried in La Kreule Military Cemetery , Hazebrouck
His brother Ernest Winfield of the Australian Army also served during the Great War and was killed in action on 19th July 1916, he is buried in VC Corner Cemetery. In memoriam published 5th September 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WINFIELD. – In loving memory of our dear sons and brothers, Lce.-Cpl. W. Winfield, Royal Fusiliers, died of wounds September 5th, 1918; also Pte. E. Winfield, A.I.F., killed in action July 19th, 1916. Bulwell. We loved you in life, you are dear to us still, but in grief we must bend to God's holy will.
