Family History

Charles Gerald Whittlesey was born in 1889 at Willingham, Cambridgeshire, he was the son of James Whittlesey a green grocer and Fanny Elizabeth Whittlesey née Drake of 23 Repton Road, Bulwell. His father James was born in 1845 at Willingham, his mother Fanny Elizabeth Drake was born in 1846 at Oakham, Rutland, they were married in 1877 at Chesterton, Cambridgeshire and went on to have 6 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 23 Repton Road, Bulwell, Nottingham, James 66 yrs is a green grocer, he is living with his wife Fanny Elizabeth and two of their children, Alice Maud 26 yrs a blouse maker and Charles Gerald 22 yrs a collier.

Military History

Rifleman Charles Gerald Whittlesey enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bulwell, he served with the 9th battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps, he was killed in action on 30th July 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
