Family History

Leonard Whalley was born in 1896 at Bulwell, he was the son of Thomas a blast furnance worker and Naomi Whalley née Corden and the brother of Thomas Henry, Edna Miriam, Victoria Evelyn, Hector, Francis Hilda and Floence Jane Whalley. In 1901 they lived at 8 Chaworth Street and in 1911 at 77 Latham Street (both Bulwell Nottingham). His father Thomas was born in 1862 at Cotton, Shropshire, his mother Naomi Corden was born in 1870 at Bulwell, they were married on 23rd December 1893 at St Mary’s Church, Arnold, Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at 77 Latham Street, Bulwell, Thomas 49 yrs is a blast furnace worker, he is living with his wife Naomi 41 yrs and their 7 children, including Leonard 15 yrs a grocers assistant.

Military History

Second Lieutenant Leonard Whalley enlisted on 7th September 1914 into the 9th Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment. He went to France on 27th August 1915 and was wounded in July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, he was then invalided home to a military hospital in Lancashire. He was commissioned into the 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 31st October 1917 and was killed in action at “Happy Valley’ near Bray-sur-Somme on 26th March 1918, aged 22.his name is commemorated : Pozieres Memorial, France. Panel 52 – 54.

Nottingham Evening Post dated 26th March 1918 - WHALLEY. – In loving memory of Second-Lieut. Leonard Whalley, 15th Sherwoods, killed in action March 26th, 1918. Until the day breaks. – From his sorrowing mother, father, sisters, and brothers, also Tom and Grace.” His father Sergeant T. Whalley M.P.S.C (Military Provost Staff Corps) and elder brother Sergeant T. M. Whalley R.F.A (Royal Field Artillery) also served.
