Family History

John William Verity was born on 25th November 1880 at Holbeck, Leeds, and was baptised on 9th April 1882 at St Matthews Church Holbeck. He was the son of John a coal miner and Priscilla Verity née Morley of 13 Chatworth Street, Bulwell Nottingham. His father John was born in 1856 in Hunslett Leeds and his mother Priscilla Morley was born in 1860 in Bulwell. They were married on 3rd September 1879 at Hunslett and went on to have 11 children, two of whom died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children were: John William b1880 Holbeck, Arthur b1883 Holbeck, Eleanor b1885 Hunslett, Ada b1885 Nottingham, Ethel b1887 Nottingham, Emily b1889 Nottingham, Samuel b1890 Nottingham, Lillian b 1895 Nottingham and Charles b1899 Nottingham. John William married his wife Sarah Poole on 8th November 1902 at the Parish Church, Bulwell; they lived at 6 Bestwood Terrace, Bulwell. They went on to have a son Stanley born 10th August 1911 at Bulwell. In the 1911 census his parents are living at 13 Chatsworth Street, Bulwell, and are shown as John 55 yrs a coal miner who is living with his wife Priscilla 51 yrs and two of their children, Lillian 16 yrs a lace curtain folder and Charles 11 yrs a scholar. In the same census we find John William and his wife living on the same street as his parents at 1 Chatsworth Street. He is shown as being aged 30 years, married, a coal miner, and living with Sarah Verity 29 yrs. Following his death his widow Sarah received a letter from the War Office dated 8th November 1916 informing her that she would be paid a pension of 15 shillings a week for herself and her child, effective 21st August 1916.

Military History

Private John William Verity enlisted on 22nd September 1915 at Nottingham. He gave his age as 34 yrs and 10 months and was living at 6 Bestwood Terrace, Bulwell, his occupation was that of a coal miner. He was posted to the 26th battalion Middlesex Regiment and joined his battalion on 28th September 1915 at Hornchurch. He died on 20th February 1916 at the Camp Hospital at Witley of tubercular meningitis. He had not served abroad. He is buried in Bulwell (St Mary) Churchyard (grave ref. 1891.113).
