George Thomas Stevenson was born in 1884 at Bulwell he was the son of William a colliery labourer and Hannah Stevenson née Woodward of 172 Bradford Street, Bulwell. His father William was born in 1842 at Bulwell, his mother Hannah Woodward was born in 1847 at Eastwood, they were married in 1868 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census his parents are living at 172 Bradford Street, Bulwell, William 69 yrs is a colliery labourer, he is living with his wife Hannah 64 yrs and their son Edward 35 yrs single and a hamper maker. George Thomas married Elizabeth Ann Baxter born 19th November 1885 Bulwell on 21st November 1904 at St John’s Church, Buwell , they had the following children, Eva born 5th October 1904, George born 6th July 1907, Horace born 2nd March 1909, Edith 10th October 1910 and Arthur born 3rd October 1913. In the 1911 census George Thomas and his family are living at 124 Bradford Street, Bulwell, he is 26 yrs of age and is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Ann 21 yrs and their children, Eva 6 yrs, Horace 2 yrs and Edith 6 months old. Commencing 24th June 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 37 shillings and 11 pence a week, at this time the family are living at 88 Balfour Road, New Village, Bentley, Doncaster.
Private George Henry Stevenson enlisted at Doncaster, he served with the 2nd battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light infantry, he landed in France on 27th July 1915 and was killed in action on 2nd December 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot, Memorial
