Family History

Alexander Stevenson (junior) was born in 1883 at Bulwell he was the son of Alexander Stevenson (senior) a coal miner hewer and the late Ann Stevenson née Gent of 119 Logan Hill, Bulwell. His father Alexander Stevenson (senior) was born in 1860 at Codnor, Derbyshire, his mother Ann Gent was born in1859 at Golden Valley, Derbyshire, she died in 1904 age 45 yrs, they were married on 2nd August 1880 at St Marys Church Nottingham they went on to have 6 children. In the 1911 census his widowed father Alexander 51 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living at 119 Logan Hill, Bulwell, he is living with his children, Edward 22 yrs a coal miner hewer the Jesse 17 yrs working at home and Alfred 14 yrs no occupation stated. Alexander Stevenson (junior) married Mary Truman born 6th August 1881 in 1902 at Nottingham, they lived at 30 Robinsons Hill, Bulwell, they had 3 children, Gladys Edna born 1903, Edward Leonard born 10th April 1908 and Mary Elizabeth born 1st July 1909. In the 1911 census the family are living at 30 Robinsos Hill, Bulwell Alexander 28 yrs is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Mary 29 yrs and their children, Gladys Edna 8 yrs, Edward Leonard 2 yrs and Mary Elizabeth 1 year of age. Commencing 14th April 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 26 shillings a week.

Military History

Corporal Alexander Stevenson enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bulwell, he served with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.he was killed in action between 17th and 19th September 1918 and his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.
