Family History

Charles Starbuck was born in 1898 at Bulwell and was the son of Urban a coal miner hewer and Mary Ann Starbuck née Jennings of 69 Merchant Street, Bulwell, Nottingham. His father Urban was born in 158 at Langley Mill, his mother Mary Ann Jennings was born in 1859 at East Loames, Suffolk they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 11 children. In the 1911 census the family are living 69 Merchant Street, Bulwell, Urban 52 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 52 yrs and their children, Lille 24 yrs a lace dresser, Nellie 22 yrs a lace dresser, Thomas 15 yrs a colliery rope boy, Charles 13 yrs a scholar, Leonard 11 yrs, and William 9 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Charles Starbuck enlisted on 8th June 1915 at Hucknall, giving his age as 19 yrs and 79 days (which was false he was actually 17 yrs of age) his address as 69 Merchant Street, Bulwell, he gave his occupation as that of a collier and his next of kin as his father Urban of the same address. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 6th March 1916 and died of wounds on 5th September 1916 and is buried at Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No 1

Extra Information

His older brother Lance Bombardier Thomas Starbuck enlisted at Hucknall, he served with the 130th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He died of illness at 21st stationary hospital, Salonika and is buried at Sarigol Military Cemetery, Greece.
