On the 1911 Census he was cited as the son of Joshua (confirmed by the Soldiers' Effects Register) and Maria Bostock and the brother of William and Ivy Bostock. In 1911 they lived at 8 Hoewood Terrace Bulwell Nottingham. John was two when his mother Maria Smedley married Joshua Bostock in 1897 and evidently opted to enlist under his birth surname.
