Family History

John William Radford was born in 1887 at Bulwell, he was the son of John a coal miner hewer and Alice Radford née Percival of 31 Jennison Street, Bulwell. His father John was born in 1864 at Bulwell, his mother Alice Percival was born in 1865 at Newhall , Derbyshire they were married on 1st July 1882 at St John’s Church, Bulwell, they went on to have 16 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 18 Farley Street, Bulwell. John 50 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Alice 47 yrs and their children, Elizabeth Kirk (née Radford a widow and John William 24 yrs a coal miner, Walter 20 yrs a coal miner, Clarence 14 yrs a coal miner, Wilfred 12 yrs a scholar, George Percival 10 yrs a scholar, Ada 6 yrs Jack 4 yrs and Mabel 2 years of age.

Military History

Rifleman John William Radford enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 4th battalion Rifle Brigade, he was killed in action on 9th May 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
