George Porter was born in 1894 at Southwick, Northamptonshire, and was the son of George a farm labourer and Elizabeth Porter née Starkey.His father George was born in 1862 in Langtoft and his mother Elizabeth Starkey was born in 1856 also in Langtoft. They married in 1884 in Bourne and went on to have nine children, sadly one was to die in infancy; their surviving children were Mary b1886, Sarah Ann b1888, Arthur William b1890, Elizabeth b1892, Emma b1893, George b1894, John b1898 and Frank b1900. All were born in Langtoft. In the 1911 census the family are living at Langtoft and are shown as George 49 yrs a farm labourer who is living with his wife Elizabeth 55 yrs and their children, Arthur William 21 yrs a farm labourer, George 17 yrs a farm labourer, John 13 yrs a farm labourer and Frank 11 yrs a scholar.
George Porter enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing in Langtoft, Lincolnshire. He served with the 1/7th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles). He landed in France on 28th February 1915 and died of wounds at No. 1 Canadian General Hospital on 25th June 1915. He was buried in Etaples Military Cemetery.
