Claude Murden was born in 1899 at Bulwell, he was the son of John William Murden a coal miner hewer and Elizabeth Murden of 22 Mersey Street, Bulwell, Nottingham. His father John William Murden was born in 1854 at Plumbtree, his mother Elizabeth was born in 1854 at Bethnall Green, they were married C1876 they went on to have 14 children, sadly 9 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at 22 Mersey Street, Bulwell, Nottingham, John William 57 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with hs wife Elizabeth 57 yrs and their children, Sarah Jane 29 yrs a hosiery hand, Fanny 17 yrs a hosiery hand, Mary 14 yrs a hosiery hand, Claude 12 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Claude Murden enlisted at Hucknall whilst residing at Bulwell, giving his age as 17 yrs and 6 months, he was living at 22 Mersey Street, Bulwell, he served with the 6th battalion Leicestershire Regiment, and was killed in action on 23rd March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial,
