John Mooney was born in 1889 in Bulwell and was the son of John, a blast furnance worker, and Jane Mooney née Corden of 69 Austin Street, Bulwell, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1862 in Ireland, his mother Jane Corden was born in 1863 in Bulwell, they were married in 1883. Their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District; they went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Bulwell: Polly 1884, John b1889, Martin b1892, Annie b1893, Thomas b1894, Dennis b1895 and Margaret Susan b1905. His father John died in 1909 at Nottingham; he was 44 yrs of age. In the 1911 census the family are living at 250 Coventry Road, Bulwell, and are shown as Jane 47 yrs a widow, who is living with her children: John 22yrs a general labourer, Martin 20 yrs a blast furnace worker in pig iron works, Annie 18 yrs a starch worker, Thomas 17 yrs a loader for a plant pot maker, Dennis 16 yrs a loader for a plant pot maker and Margaret Susan 6 yrs a scholar.
Private John Mooney enlisted in Lincoln and served with 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He landed in France on 23rd February 1915. He was reported missing in May 1916 and later confirmed as killed in action on 9 May 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
