Family History

William was born in 1892 in Bulwell and was the son of Frederick a decorator and Mary Ann Metcalf née Howard of 34, Coventry Rd., Bulwell, Nottingham. His father Frederick was born in 1869 in Radford, his mother Mary Ann Howard was born in 1868 in Stotford, Bedfordshire, they were married in 1888, their marriage is recorded in the Basford Registration district. They went on to have five children , they were all born in Bulwell and were : - Alice b1889, Frederick b1890, William b1892, Annie b1895 and Reginald b1905. In the 1911 census the family are living at 134 Coventry Road, Bulwell and are shpown as Frederick 42 yrs head of the family a house decorator , he is living with his wife Mary Ann 43 yrs , assisting in her husbands business and their five children , Alice 22 yrs involved in house work, Frederick 21 yrs a plumber, William 19 yrs a clerk in a dying and finishing hosiery business, Annie 16 yrs a milliner and Reginald 6yr a scholar.

Military History

L/Cpl. William Metcalf, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 7th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he died of wounds at No. 10 Casualty Clearing Station on 22nd September 1915 he is buried in Lijssenthoek military cemetry
