George William Lane was born in Englefield Green, Surry, he was baptised on 23rd July 1893 at Englefield Green, Surrey, he was the son of George a domestic gardener and Susannah Lane née Clarke, of The Gardens, Bulwell Hall Park, Bulwell, Nottingham. His fater George Lane was born in 1861 at Arnold, Nottingham, his mother Susannah Clarke was born in 1859 at Marylebone, Middlesex, they were married on 24th August 1891 at Christ Church, Hanover Square, London. They had a further child, Olive born 1896 Englefield Green, Surrey. In the 1911 census the family are living at Bulwell Hall Park, Bulwell, George 51 yrs is a domestic gardener, he is living with his wife Susannah 52 yrs and their daughter Olive 15 yrs an apprentice dress maker. George William Lane is in the Army at this date and does not appear on the 1911 with his family.
Corporal George William Lane, enlisted in Grantham, Lincolnshire, he initially served with service number 11859 in the Lincolnshire Regiment, later transferring to 4th Battalion Special Brigade, Royal Engineers. He died as a result of gas poisoning at No. 20 Casualty Clearing Station on 29th June 1916. He is buried in Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty.Grave Reference: 1 E 13
In memoriam published on 28th June 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post : -“LANE. – In proud and loving memory of our dear son and brother, Corpl. G. W. Lane, Special Brigade, R.E., who died of gas poisoning June 29th, 1916. – From mother, father, and sister, Bulwell Hall Park, Nottingham.“LANE. – In memory of Corpl. G. W.
