Family History

Andrew Henshaw was born in 1895 at Bulwell, he was the son of Joseph Henshaw a coal miner hewer and Jane Henshaw née Moakes, his father Joseph was born in 1862 at Cotmanhay,Derbyshire his mother Jane Moakes was born in 1862 at South Normanton, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 8 children sadly 5 of whom died in infancy or early childhood, his two surviving siblings were Hannah born 1887 and Doris born 1894. In the 1911 census the family are living at 54 Hucknall Lane Bulwell, Joseph 49 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with is wife Jane 49 yrs and two of their children, Doris 17 yrs a lace curtain maker and Andrew 16 yrs a hosiery bleacher.

Military History

Lance Corporal Andrew Henshaw enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bulwell, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was awarded the Military Medal which was announced in the London Gazette on 26th March 1917. He died of wounds 21st September 1917, aged 24. Buried: Godewaersvelde British Cemetery, France. Plot 1. Row E. Grave 3.
