Family History

Albert Grocutt was born in 1889 at Bulwell, he was the son of Samuel a coal miner hewer and Mary Jane Grocutt née Bennett of 178 Commercial Road, Bulwell. His father Samuel was born 1862 at Cowley, Staffordshire, his mother Mary Jane Bennett was born in 1866 at New Leake, Lincolnshire, they were married on 28th December 1882 at the Bulwell Register Office, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood. He was the husband of Minnie Clifton (born 5th March 1890) they were married on 20th November 1909 at St John’s Church, Bulwell they had two children, Esther May born 23rd April 1910 and Lily born 15th March 1913. In 1911 they lived at 104 Merchant Street Bulwell Nottingham. Albert 22 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Minne 21 yrs and their daughter Esther May 11 months. In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 178 Commercial Road, Bulwell, Samuel 49 yrs is a coal miner hewer and is living with his wife Mary 45 yrs and their children Ernest 17 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Polly 14 yrs and Leonard 8 yrs of age. Commencing 4th April 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence, Minnie remarried Lewis Worker on 9th June 1917 and they lived at 97 Yorke Street Mansfield Woodhouse Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Rifleman Albert Grocutt enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 9th battalion Rifle Brigade, landing in France on 21st May 1915. He was killed in action on 24th June 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium
