John Henry Greenway was born in 1893 in Bulwell and was the son of William a coal miner and Fanny Greenway (nee Burden), of 21, Sefton Rd., Walton, Liverpool. His father William was born in 1866 in Brailes, Warwickshire, his mother Fanny Burden was born in 1868 also in Brailes, Warwickshire, they were married in 1888, their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 10 children , sadly three of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were :- Eveline Jessie b1889, George William b1892, John Henry b1893, Ethel Kate b1895, Louise b1900, Clara Fanny b1902, and Doris b1903, all the children were born in Bulwell. In the 1911 census the family are living at 161 Quarry Road, Bulwell, Nottingham and are shown as William 45 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Fanny 43 yrs and their children , George William 19 yrs a colliery labourer, John Henry 18 yrs a hosiery trimmer, Ethel Kate 16 yrs, Louise 11 yrs, Clara Fanny 9 yrs and Doris 8 yrs
John Henry Greenway was a wireless operator serving on board SS Civilian which was sunk on 6th October 1917. His name is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial in London.
On October 6th, 1917, the British steamer SS Civilian, on a voyage from Liverpool to Calcutta with general cargo, was sunk by the German submarine UC-74 (Wilhelm Marschall), 15 miles north of Alexandria. 2 persons were killed including John Henry Greenway
