Family History

John Gent was born in 1894 in Bulwell and was the only son of Frederick William a millwright and Emma Gent née Rankmore of 24 Hucknall Lane Bulwell Nottingham. His father Frederick was born in 1866 in Bulwell and his mother Emma Rankmore was born in 1868 in Somerset, they were married in 1892, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have two further daughters Lily b1896 and Doris b1901 both born in Bulwell. In the 1911 census they were living at 24 Hucknall Lane, Bulwell and are shown as Frederick William 45 yrs a millwright, he is living with his wife Emma 43 yrs and their children John 17 yrs a joiners apprentice, Lily 15 yrs a desk girl in lace finishing trade and Doris 10 rs a scholar.

Military History

Sapper John Gent, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 178th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers. He landed in France on 19th July 1915 . He died of wounds in No. 36 Casualty Clearing Station on 4th August 1916 and is buried in Heilly Station Cemetery Merricourt L'Abbe
