Vernon William Gellatly was born in 1893 in Sheffield and was the son of Robert Gold a blacksmith and Mary Ann Gellatly née Marriott of 82 Broomhill Road, Bulwell, Nottingham. His father Robert Gold was born in 1859 in Glasgow and his mother Mary Ann Marriott was born in 1865 in Cropwell, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1883 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 9 children , sadly three of whom died in infancy or early childhood prior to 1911. Their surviving children were : Sydney b1885 Langley Mill, Agnes b1886 Langley Mill, Cecilia b1889 Langley Mill, Jessie b1891 Langley Mill, Verner b1893 Sheffield and Dorothea b1899 Langley Mill. In the 1911 census the family are living at 82 Broomhill Road, Bulwell, Nottingham and are shown as Robert 52 yrs a blacksmith he is living with his wife Mary Ann 46 yrs and their children, Sydney 26 yrs a fitter , Jessie 20 yrs, Verner 17 yrs an assistant grocer , and Dorothea 12 yrs a scholar.
Private Verner William Gellatly, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Welbeck Rangers). He was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 and is buried in Knightsbridge Cemetery, Mesnil-Martinsart.
In memoriam published 3rd September 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “GELLATLY. – In loving memory of Private V. W. Gellatly, Sherwood Foresters, killed in action September 3rd, 1916. No morning dawns, no night returns, but what we think and speak of you. – Mother, father, Dorothea, Agnes, Reg (Egypt). “GELLATLY. – In loving memory of Private V. W. Gellatly, Sherwood Foresters, killed in action September 3rd, 1916. He nobly answered duty's call; he gave his life for one and all. – Alex, Cecilia, and Percy (Salonika). “GELLATLY. – In loving memory of Private V. W. Gellatly, Sherwood Foresters, killed in action September 3rd, 1916.
