Harry was born in 1894 in Bulwell and was the son of William a colliery labourer and and Alice Barratt née Read, of 34 Scott Street, Bulwell. His father William was born in 1861 in Olney Buckinghamshire and his mother Alice Read was born in 1865 in Wigan Lancashire, they were married in 1884 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they had 7 children according to the 1911 census however only the following can be found recorded on the 1881-1911 census, they are :- Joseph b1886 Bestwood, Arthur b1890 Hucknall, Jenny b1892 Hucknall, Harry b1894 Bulwell and Fred b1896 Bulwell. In 1911 they lived at 34 Scott Street Bulwell Nottingham and are shown as William 50 yrs a colliery labourer, head of the family, he is living with his wife Alice 46 yrs and their children , Joseph 25 yrs a coal miner, Arthur 21 yrs a coal miner, Jenny 19 yrs a lace worker, Harry 17 yrs a pony driver at a colliery and Fred 14 yrs a pony driver at a colliery . In 1915 in Nottingham Harry married his wife Mary G Beaumont
Private Harry Barratt, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 12th/13th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He landed in France on 9th September 1915 , he was reported missing on 21st March 1918 and later confirmed as killed in action on that date. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.
Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 4th February 1919:- “BARRATT. – Missing, March 21st now reported killed, after 3½ years' service, Pte. Harry Barratt, Northumberland Fusiliers, aged 24, the dearly beloved husband of Emma Barratt (nee Beaumont). We think we see his smiling face, As he bade his last good-bye, And he left his home for ever, In a distant land to die. We think of him in silence, And his name we often call, But there's nothing left to answer, But his photo on the wall. – From his sorrowing wife and family. “BARRATT. – Missing March 21st, now reported killed, Pte. Harry Barrett, Northumberland Fusiliers, aged 24.
