Robert Watts was born in 1899 at Sheffield and was the son of William a labourer and Lucy Watts, née Smithson of 41 Devonshire Road, Sherwood. His father William was born in 1872 at Aslcockton, his mother Lucy Smithson was born in 1874 at Scarrington, she died in 1922 aged 48 yrs, they were married in 1895 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district. They went on to have the following children, Ethel May b1898, Robert b1899, Alice b1901, Lillian b1902, and Nellie b1904 all were born in Sheffield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 3 May Cottages , Wallis Street, Old Basford and were shown as William 39 yrs a labourer, he is living with his wife Lucy 37 yrs and their children Ethel May 13 yrs working in cigar box factory, Robert 12 yrs a scholar, Alice 10 yrs a scholar, Lillian 9 yrs a scholar and Nellie 7 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Robert Watts enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Old Basford, he served with the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and was killed in action on 21st March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres memorial
