John William Stirland was born in 1891 at Basford and was the son of John Henry Stirland a colliery electrician and Eliza Stirland, née Gregory of 54 Wilton Street, Basford, Nottingham. His father John Henry Stirland was born in 1869 at Basford and his mother Eliza Gregory was born in 1870 at Eastwood, they were married in 1890, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 7 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children, all born in Basford were, John William b1891, Mabel B1893, Nellie b1901 and Eva b1902. In the 1911 census the family are living at 54 Wilton Street, Basford and are shown as John Henry 42 yrs a colliery electrician, he is living with his wife Eliza 41 yrs and their children, John William 19 yrs a coal miner, Mabel 18 yrs a hosiery hand, Nellie 10 yrs a scholar and Eva 9 yrs a scholar.
Private John William Stirland attested on 11th December 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 24 yrs and 7 months, his address as 54 Old Wilton Street, Old Basford, Nottingham, his occupation was that of a coal miner and his next of kin was his father John Henry Stirland of the same address, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 6th June 1918 and posted to the North Staffordshire Regiment on 10th June 1918. Just prior to embarkation on 24th September 1918 he was posted to the 9th battalion, Norfolk Regiment. He was killed in action on 8th October 1918 and is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gouy, Aisne, France grave reference F.V. B4
