Family History

Henry Leslie Spencer was born in 1895 at Lenton and was the son of Thomas Henry a tram conductor and Ann Spencer néé Bexon of 10 Burnaby Street, Basord, Nottingham. His father Thomas Henry was born in 1873 at Basford, his mother Ann Bexon was born in 1873 at Nottingham, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Henry Leslie b1895 Lenton, Cyril, b1896 Basford, Gertrude b1900 Basford, Wilfred b1902 Basford and Beatrice Spencer b1903 Basford. In the 1911 census the family lived at 10 Burnaby Street Basford Nottingham and were shown as Thomas Henry Spencer 38 yrs a tram conductor, he is living with his wife Ann 38 yrs and their children, Henry Leslie 16 yrs an assistant in a pawn shop, Cyril 15 yrs a hosiery trimmer, Gerty 11 yrs, Wilfred 9 yrs and Beatrice 8 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Henry Leslie Spencer, attested under the Derby Scheme at Nottingham on 8th December 1915, giving his age as 21 yrs and 5 months and his address as 10 Burnaby Street, Old Basford, Nottingham, he gave his occupation as that of a shunter. His next of kin was his mother Ann of the same address, he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised on 1st July 1916 and was posted to 13th (Reserve) Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, four days later. He was then transferred to 12th Battalion Training Reserve on 1st September 1916; and 26th May 1917. Worsening health led to his discharge due to pleurisy contracted due to “sleeping between damp blankets” on 11th July 1917. He died on 30th August 197 and is buried at Bulwell (Northern) Cemetery Grave Reference: T 6 14
