Family History

Jesse Hills was born in 1881 Bulwell and was the son of the late James a gas work labourer and his first wife Hannah Hills née Giggles of 3 Ekowe Terrace, Ekowe Street, Old Basford. His father James was born in 1840 at Sutton Bedfordshire, he died in 1916 aged 76 yrs, his mother Hannah Giggles was born in 1840 at Potton, Bedfordshire, she died in 1896 aged 56 yrs, they were married in 1861 at Biggleswade and went on to have the following children, Mary Ann b1867, Elizabeth b1867, John b1872 Trumpington, Cambridgeshire, George b1875 Potton, Bedfordshire and Jesse b1881 Bulwell. In the 1911 census Jesse Hills is boarding at 67 Vernon Ave, Old Basford he is shown as being 30 yrs a carter for a laundry company, he is boarding with James Hill 41 yrs a carter and his wife Ellen 40 yrs and their family (James is his brother ) In the same 1911 census his father James is living at 3 Ekowe Terrace, Basford, he is shown as being 71 yrs a gas worker, he is living with his second wife Emma Hills he stated he had been married 13 yrs and had no children.

Military History

Private Jesse Hills attested on 9th December 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 35 yrs and 6 months, his address as 67 Vernon Ave, Basford, his occupation was that of a motor driver, his next of kin was his father James Hills of 3 Ekowe Avenue, Ekowe Street, Basford. He was posted to the reserves and was mobilised for war on 24th April 1916 and posted to the Army Service Corps. He went to India and eventually to Mesopotamia where he died on 27th September 1918 of enteric fever and is commemorated in the Tehran War Cemetery, Iran.
