Family History

Arthur was born in 1896 at Castle Donnington and was the son of James Cliffe a jobbing gardener and Charlotte Cliff née Vickers. His father was born in 1867 at Castle Donnington, Leicestershire, his mother Charlotte Vickers was born in 1869 at Swarkestone, Derbyshire, they were married in 1870 , their marriage is recorded at Melbourne Registration District, Derbyshire. They had a large family of 11 children , however sadly three were to die in infancy or childhood prior to 1911.Their surviving children , all born at Castle Donnington were :- Mary Emma b1894, Arthur b1896, John b1898, Elsie b1899, Sarah b1901, Hilda b1904, Lizzie b1907, and Rose b1909. In the 1911 census the family are living at St Anns Lane, Castle Donnington and are shown as James 44 yrs , head of the family a jobbing gardener, he is living with his wife Charlotte 42 yrs and their children, Mary Emma 17 yrs a hosiery embroidery, Arthur 15 yrs a factory errand boy, John 13 yrs a fishmongers errand boy, Elsie 12 yrs, Sarah 10 yrs, Hilda 7 yrs, Lizzie 4 yrs and Rose 2 yrs.

Military History

Private Arthur Cliff enlisted in Leicestershire, giving his place of birth as Castle Donnington, he served with the 1st battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He landed in France on 20th May 1915 and joined the British Expeditionary Force. He was killed in action on 27th November 1916 and is buried in Woburn Abbey Cemetery, Cuichy.

Extra Information

His brother John Cliff also served in the Great War in the Leicestershire Regiment, he survived the war.
