Family History

Charles Burton was born in 1899 the son of Albert a bricklayer's labourer and Anna Maria Burton (née Widdowson). Albert was born in 1877 at Basford and died on 17th May 1917 at Nottingham aged 40. Anna Maria Widdowson was born in 1878 at Basford. Married on 6th March 1897 at Basford parish church, they had the following children - Albert b.1898 Basford, Charles b.1899 Bulwell, Wilfred b.1901 Bulwell and Arthur b.1908 at Basford. In 1911, the family was living at 5, Bell Terrace, Cheltenham Street, Old Basford. Anna Maria was a lace curtain mender and 13 year old Albert a bleach worker.

Military History

Lance Corporal Charles Burton enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Old Basford. He initially served (3892) in the Sherwood Foresters. He died of wounds on 10th October 1918 and is buried at St. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, Grave Reference: Div. 62 V I 7

Extra Information

Charles's father Albert Burton served (27368) in the 2nd Garrison Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment during the Great war. He died of pneumonia on 17th May 1917.
