Walter Benner was born in 1887 in Nottingham and was the son of Walter the manager of a public baths and Catherine Benner, née Roberts of Duffield, Derby.His father Walter was born in 1857 in Nottingham and his mother was born in 1862 in Shardlow Derbyshire, they were married in 1883 in Shardlow and went on to have 6 children , sadly three of whom died in infancy, their surviving three children were all born in Nottingham and were : William Roger b1885, Walter b1887 and Dorothy b1889. In the 1911 census the family are shown as living at Radford Baths, Thackery Street, Nottingham, and are shown as Walter 54 yrs the manager of the public baths , he is living with his wife Catherine 49 yrs assisting her husband manage the public baths and their 3 children , William Roger 26 yrs an engineering draughtsman, Walter 24 yrs an architects assistant and Dorothy 22 yrs an assistant school mistress. His probate was proven on 6th November 1918 in London and shows him as Walter Benner of 95 St Annes Road East, St Annes on Sea, Lancashire, Lieutenant Sherwood Foresters , died 2nd September 1918 in France on active service. his effects of £412, 2shillings and 4 pence were left to Catherine Benner (his mother)
Lieutenant Walter Benner,initially enlisted on 9th July 1915 into the Sherwood Foresters and was a Lance Corporal from 2nd December 1915 until 9th January 1916, Later serving with the Officers Training Corps. He was commissioned on 10th January 1916 from the Inns of Court Officers' Training Corps, he was posted to 17th Battalion (Welbeck Rangers) before serving with 16th Battalion (Chatsworth Rifles). He was attached 101st Trench Mortar Battery, and was severely wounded, a bullet in the jaw on 3rd September 1916. He was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1917. He was killed in action on 2nd September 1918 he has no known grave and his name is commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial (Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A).
His elder brother William Roger Benner also served in the Great War, he was a private service number 2311 in the Sherwood Foresters, he landed in France on 28th February 1915. He was commissioned into the regiment as 2nd Lieutenant on 8th October 1915. He survived the war.Obituary published 9th September 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :_KILLED.“LIEUT. WALTER BENNER, Sherwood Foresters, was killed in action on September 2nd. He was the son of Mrs. Walter Benner, late of Nottingham, and now of St. Annes-on-Sea.
