Family History

Sydney Bates was born in 1901 at Old Basford and was the son of George James a railway platelayer and his second wife Annie Bates nee Geeson of 182 Arnold Road, Old Basford. His father George James was born in 1859 at Radcliffe on Trent, he married his first wife Elizabeth Geeson (born 1865 Normaton on Trent) in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Grantham registration district, she died in 1895 aged 30 yrs of age, they had the following children, Annie Isabel b1888, George James b1889, Thomas b1893 and Phillip b1895, all were born in Nottingham. After the death of his first wife Elizabeth his father went on to re marry Annie Geeson (born 1863 Bottesford) in 1899 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham registration district, they went on to have 2 further children, Sydney b1901 and Arthur b1904 both born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 182 Arnold Road, Old Basford and are shown as George James Bates 52 yrs a railway platelayer, he is living with his (second) wife Annie 48 yrs and his children, Annie Isabel 23 yrs a clerk to a lace manufacturer, George James 22 yrs a railway plate layer, Thomas 18 yrs a railway plate layer, Phillip 16 yrs a van driver, Sydney 10 yrs a scholar and Arthur 7 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Sydney Bates enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 53rd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of pneumonia on 2nd November 1918, aged 18, at Clipstone Camp Military Hospital, Nottinghamshire. He is buried at New Basford Cemetery
