Lionel was born in 1892 the son of Henry (former Nottingham City Police sergeant) and Annie Windybank (née Riley) of 'Albany Club,' Albany Road, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham. His father was born in 1859 at Petersfield , Hampshire and his mother in 1863 at Mansfield Woodhouse. Married 11/10/1884 at St Nicholas Church, Plumstead, Greenwich, they had three children Violet b.1888 Weymouth, Dorset, Lionel b.1892 Hyson Green and Roland b.1897 in Hyson Green. In 1911 they lived at 93 Harcourt Road Nottingham. Violet was a dressmaker and Roland a warehouse man. Lionel married Ivy Jenkinson at the Registry Office at Nottingham on 11th December 1913. Their son Henry Arthur was born 19/3/1915 and they lived at 18 Glen Roy Terrace Manning Street Nottingham. With effect from 3/8/1918, Ivy was awarded a weekly pension of 20s/5d for herself and son.
Lionel Windybank enlisted in Derby on 10th December was posted to the reserves the following day. On 11th April 1916 he was mobilised and on 13th April 1916 was posted to the Sherwood Foresters. He landed in France on 16th August 1916 where he served until 9th February 1917 when he was admitted to 32 Stationary Hospital with trench foot. He was returned to England on 10th and admitted to Military Hospital at Red House Cromer. He was eventually returned to France on 22nd May 1917. He was killed in action on 16th September 1917, he has no known grave his name is commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial.
